The Advantages Of A Good Self Tanning Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

It is a well known fact that for years self tanning lotion has been used as a safer tanning option. Formulas have changed a lot during that time. The brands and formulas are all but endless. And the price range is equally as broad.

In the 1920s German scientists stumbled onto the skin coloring effects of DHA, a white crystalline powder that attracts water molecules from the surrounding environment. This is now the main additive in self tanners. These scientists noticed after a spill that the substance turned the surface of the skin brown.

A well known maker of tanning products created the first self tanner. Other companies followed suit, marketing their versions of the product. However, none of the products of this time truly satisfied the needs of the consumer.

The fake orange tan was not quite what people were going for. Since that time there have been many advances. Although there are still some lotions that do not work well, there are some that do. These are usually a bit more expensive. But the main thing to consider is how much DHA is contained in the product. This will determine how dark the skin will be after use. More of this substance will yield a darker tan.

Today there are so many other options. Aerosol sprays, air brushing, permanent tattooing, and even injections are more recent methods that people are using. Still, lotions may have moisturizing qualities that these other options just do not offer. Having a darker complexion is obviously important to a number of naturally fair skinned individuals.

Historically tanned skin was frowned upon as it was associated with a lower working class. Today, that is far from being the case. This is a huge market and highly profitable for suppliers. Fair skinned women are at the top of the list of consumers. But both women and men use tanning lotions. Whether it is to appear much darker or to just even out the skin tone, consumers want to be tan.

In recent years, those with fair skin have not been the only ones using self tanners. There are those who already have tan or dark toned skin who desire to be even darker. Women of color are now tanning. Those who do use these products enjoy the benefits of a more even complexion. And if the lotion contains shimmer, the golden effect is a welcome enhancement to their already exotic appearance.

When used as directed the lotions which contain DHA are safe. They are to be applied topically. Even pregnant women use them and are not concerned for the safety of their unborn baby. It is certainly a safer option than being exposed to the sun. Obviously a concern for safety would be if the product got into the nose, throat, or eyes. And rarely, one could have an allergic reaction.

It is good that this option is available for tanning oneself. Some brands have better ratings than others. Reviews can be found online. Do your research and you should easily find a self tanning lotion that will work well for you.
